Last weekend, Siesta beach vibrated to the rhythm of an exemplary activity led by the Mayor of Djibouti, Mr. Saïd Daoud Mohamed, accompanied by his 2nd deputy and the technical agents of the town hall. Ensemble, ils ont supervisé une opération d’envergure : la plantation de palmiers sur ce site emblématique, s’inscrivant pleinement dans le cadre du programme Green City et en faveur de la promotion de l’économie bleue. This initiative reflects the Mayor's unwavering commitment to diversifying the planting of plant species in public spaces in Djibouti. More than just a beautification effort, these plantations embody a sustainable vision to strengthen the ecological resilience of the capital while enhancing its natural heritage. “These trees don’t just beautify our urban landscapes. They play a key role in combating pollution, improving air quality, and reducing the impacts of climate change. In line with the strategic vision of the President of the Republic, His Excellency Ismaïl Omar Guelleh, this initiative is aligned with the sustainable development objectives which aim to make Djibouti an ecological and modern capital. By integrating the principles of the blue economy, the city is focusing on harmonious management of marine and coastal resources to stimulate economic development while preserving the environment. La Siesta Beach, now enriched with these majestic palm trees, has become a symbol of this balance between green urban planning and the enhancement of coastal areas. The Green City program, through these initiatives, illustrates a broader ambition: to transform Djibouti into a capital where nature and modernity coexist harmoniously, for the benefit of the environment, citizens and the economy. And this is just the beginning. The city council soon plans to extend this operation to the capital's main arteries. The goal is to plant an even greater number of trees, with a focus on palm trees for their aesthetic appeal and ability to adapt to local climate conditions. An additional initiative that will strengthen Djibouti’s commitment to a sustainable and green future. In this perspective, the potential repercussions of this action are multiple and promising, both on the environmental and economic and social levels. By strengthening the city's green cover, this initiative will contribute to a significant reduction in air pollution, thus providing healthier air to residents and improving their quality of life. Palm trees, in particular, will help mitigate the effects of heat waves through their ability to create shaded areas, making public spaces more pleasant and livable. Furthermore, this increased greenery will beautify the urban landscape, attracting more tourists and strengthening the city’s attractiveness. On the economic level, it will promote the development of a green and blue economy by stimulating sectors such as seaside tourism, recreational activities and landscaping. Finally, this approach strengthens social ties by offering friendly meeting spaces, while raising awareness among the population of the importance of preserving the environment.
