Djibouti City and Jigjiga, the capital of Ethiopia's Somali region, formalised a twinning agreement on Wednesday aimed at strengthening their ties, according to local authorities. The mayor of Djibouti City, Said Daoud Mohamed, on an official visit to Jigjiga, and his counterpart Shaffi Ahmed initialled the partnership at the end of a working meeting. The agreement provides for increased cooperation in a number of areas, from trade to cultural and educational exchanges, as well as the sharing of municipal expertise. ‘This twinning is an important step towards bringing our two towns closer together and developing concrete projects to serve our populations’, the Djibouti mayor told ADI. His counterpart hailed it as a ‘fraternal gesture that reflects our shared desire to build solid and lasting relations’. This initiative was presented by both parties as a ‘promising step’ to boost local cooperation, seen as a lever for stability and development.
