The commissioning ceremony for the two new patrol vessels of the Djiboutian Coast Guard, presided over this Thursday by the President of the Republic, His Excellency Ismail Omar Guelleh, brought together the nation’s top authorities. Among the distinguished guests was the Mayor of Djibouti City, Mr. Said Daoud, who participated in this significant event for national maritime security.
The Mayor, as one of the honored attendees, had the opportunity to exchange briefly with the President, emphasizing the head of state’s commitment to decentralization and urban policy—key initiatives in his roadmap. Mr. Said Daoud’s presence alongside the Minister of Infrastructure and Equipment, Mr. Hassan Houmed Ibrahim, the President of the National Assembly, Mr. Dileyta Mohamed, and the Japanese Ambassador, Mr. Hara Keiichi, among others, demonstrates the municipality's emphasis on maritime security—a particularly vital concern for the coastal capital.
Each patrol vessel, measuring 35 meters in length and manufactured in Japan, is equipped with advanced technology designed to significantly enhance the monitoring of territorial waters, especially around Djibouti City's port area, which serves as the country's economic hub. The Mayor had the opportunity to inspect these new assets firsthand, recognizing their role in safeguarding the maritime approaches of the capital and its tourist sites, such as Moucha and Maskali Islands.
Moreover, the ceremony highlighted Djibouti's growing role as a regional stabilizer in the Bab el-Mandeb Strait. The joint presence of the Head of State and the capital’s foremost magistrate symbolizes national unity in addressing security challenges and the municipality’s support for presidential initiatives to modernize naval forces.
With this new fleet, Djibouti City, driven by its Mayor and aligned with the strategic vision of President Guelleh, adds new capabilities to protect its maritime interests while solidifying its position as a regional hub.
